Why is there so many goddamn different threads? The only reason I can think of is for different companies can make more money by having different threads, but that's kinda ****ty... and hoping there is another reason

basically way back when, a majority of companies had their own threading because that was the trend. eventually most companies went to autococker threads but some companies that are greedy and wanted to cornerstone their own industries barrels made sure they had their own threading. and there you have it.
Honestly, I think it didn't originate out of any particular greed... just a matter of who already had what tooling in their shops.
Why go out and spend several hundred dollars on dies just to conform?
actually its a simple business strategy. look at apple and its original marketing stance, no other company could create accessories but them until recently when they decided to license the creation of accessories. when it comes down to it. barrel threading is simple business.
