It's unfortunante that you have had such bad perfomance from the X7 phenom. Mine works great.

AutoMag classic or AutoMag RT. They are as dependable as anything else on the market. Buy a parts kit for it. Learn the internal workings (veary easy) and you be able to fix it on the field faster...

Out of the 8 markers I have only 2 were bought new. My 1st. AutoMag classic in 1993. & my X7 phenom in 2012.
Just buy things that have parts readily available for them. Nothing worse than tracking...

Have you talked to the manufacture. This is the kind of PR they don't want. They may repair it or They may actually exchange it for you. If you send them a copy of the receipt
